Circular-ready product design

Circular economy is decided in design: material choice, design for disassembly and avoiding problematic composites determine whether and how a product can be repaired, refurbished or recycled at the end of its life.

I support companies in assessing existing products and developing circular alternatives. I follow the cradle-to-cradle idea: design products from the outset so their materials can flow fully back into the biological or technical cycle.

Circular business models

Circular economy changes not only products but also business models: take-back and refurbishing systems or product-as-a-service approaches open new sources of value and increase resilience to uncertain markets.

With the passport’s data such models become efficient to plan: knowing what is in your products and where they are lets you organise take-back, refurbishment and resale efficiently and profitably.

CE-Readiness Check

Together we analyse where material cycles are broken in your company and which regulatory requirements are actually coming your way. The result is a solid gap analysis tailored to your operation, a basis for deciding the next steps.

Workshop & action plan

With your development or production team we identify which product line can be made more circular. We map the relevant material flows and current production processes and derive concrete potential for the business. The result: a prioritised action plan for circular approaches that your team backs.

Typical circular approaches
  • Design for disassembly: design products so components can be separated and reused
  • Remanufacturing: refurbish returns or used parts and place them on the market again
  • Material transparency: document material composition and make recycled content verifiable
  • Material substitution: replace critical or hard-to-recycle materials with circular alternatives
  • Product-as-a-service: access instead of ownership, to keep control over product returns
  • Take-back systems: systematically take back and reuse used products or components

The regulatory framework

Circular economy is not only sensible, it is increasingly required. An overview of the key regulations that manufacturers should know.

European level

ESPR: Ecodesign Regulation → Document

Binding requirements for product design, repairability, recyclability and material content, applying from 2025/2026 to more and more product groups step by step.

  • Product groups: phased introduction via delegated acts, from 2025/2026 first textiles, iron & steel, aluminium, electronics, furniture. Further groups follow by 2030.
  • Digital Product Passport (DPP): every product needs a machine-readable data carrier with information on material composition, repairability, recyclability and carbon footprint.
  • Repairability: manufacturers must provide spare parts and repair instructions for a defined period. A standardised repairability scoring system is planned.
  • Recyclability: design requirements for material separability and purity. Product groups receive specific minimum quotas for recycling-friendly design.
  • Recycled content: product-group-specific minimum quotas for the use of secondary raw materials as a binding requirement.
  • Ban on destroying goods: from 2026 manufacturers and retailers may no longer destroy unsold consumer goods, first for textiles, then expanded step by step.
CSRD: sustainability reporting → Document

Obligation for comprehensive sustainability reporting including circular economy. From 2025 for large companies, from 2026 increasingly for SMEs too.

EU Battery Regulation (2023) → Document

Requirements for recycled content, carbon footprint and the digital battery passport, a blueprint for upcoming product regulations.

PPWR: Packaging Regulation → Document

Minimum requirements for recyclability and recycled content for packaging at EU level. Replaces the previous directive.

Right to Repair (2024) → Document

Repairability obligation for certain product groups. Manufacturers must provide spare parts and repair instructions.

National level (Germany)

Circular Economy Act (KrWG) → Document

The cornerstone of German circular economy policy. Governs waste prevention, reuse and recycling across the product lifetime.

Packaging Act (VerpackG) → Document

Registration and licensing obligations for manufacturers and distributors of packaging. Affects almost all manufacturing companies.

Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG) → Document

Due diligence obligations for the environment and human rights in the supply chain. Mandatory from 1,000 employees, with knock-on effects on suppliers.

ElektroG → Document

Take-back and recycling obligations for electrical and electronic equipment. Manufacturers bear responsibility for the product’s end of life.
